Limyra is an ancient city in Lycia, the ruins of which are located near Finike, in the valley of the Limyr River. In those days, almost all cities were located in the river valleys.
The city was founded in the 6th century BC by Luwians. Limyra was an ordinary Lycian city for the first two centuries of its existence. It was a part of the Persian state from 530 to 380 BC. At the beginning of the IV century, it became autonomous and independent. Pericles was the ruler of Limyra and the political leader of the entire region at that time. He declared Limyra as the main city of that region in 380. He also took part in the anti-Persian uprising in 373.
The heroon and the mausoleum of Pericles itself deserve special attention.
III-II centuries are perfect for Limyra. Trade is developing; the city is being improved. Numerous sarcophagi and tombs carved directly into the rocks have survived to this day. In the middle of the 2nd century BC, Limyra falls under the rule of Rome; and active construction begins. Today you can see the theater, baths, Roman roads, a bridge, and the agora with colonnades.
In the 4th century, Limyra became a Christian city. Pagan sanctuaries were rebuilt into Christian churches. The ruins of Basilica can be found not far from the theater. In the first centuries of Byzantium's existence, Limyra was an important city. However, due to the raids of Arab sea robbers, people began to leave the city and move to the North. As a result, the city was practically abandoned by the middle of the 9th century. Although, for a long time it was the center of the Episcopate. The invasion of the Selçuk Turks led to the fact that in the XIII century Limyra was finally abandoned.
